Brivaël Collin

PhD, Ice Melting In The Lab

Brivaël's research aims to predict, through lab experiments, how fast ice melts in saltwater. The goal is to understand how the ocean transfers heat to floating ice and what kinds of flows it can create. To do this, he works in a cold chamber and uses multiple experimental techniques, such as shadowgraphy, particle image velocimetry (PIV), and moving measurements of temperature and salinity. He is a third-year PhD student, with his contract ending in February 2026.

PhD, Tropical Circulation & Climate

Tim studies the possibility of major changes in the large-scale tropical circulation in warm climates. In particular, he investigates whether and under which conditions the Earth could undergo a transition to a state of superrotation, with strong westerly winds in the tropics, and the potential impacts on temperature distribution and the water cycle.

Corentin Prados

PhD, Glacial Lakes & Channels

Corentin is a PhD student jointly supervised by Louis Couston and Olivier Gagliardini at the Institut des Géosciences de l'Environnement (IGE) in Grenoble. His research focuses on the high-resolution modeling of turbulent flows within proglacial lakes and supraglacial channels. The work is motivated by the associated risks of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) resulting from the abrupt drainage of these lakes. Corentin also contributes to field observations on glaciers.

PhD, Polar Ocean Bistability

Louis studies regime shifts in ocean circulation within Antarctic ice-shelf cavities, combining low-dimensional and general circulation models. His research aims to uncover the drivers and impacts of these regime shifts, assess their reversibility, and evaluate their potential as climate tipping points.

Andrea Combette

PhD, IA applied to the Ocean

PhD 2025-2028 on data assimilation using physics informed neural networks. The aim is to reconstruct ocean currents in the presence of sparse data.

Guillaume Ricard

Postdoc Fellow, Ice Melting In The Lab

Guillaume is a postdoctoral fellow funded by the ERC IceAblation. His work interests focus on ice melting, fluid-structure interactions and turbulence. He is currently building an experimental setup to quantify the influence of turbulence and water currents on ice melting. This approach brings the experiment closer to actual conditions where ice shelves melt in the ocean. His office at ENS de Lyon is M1.034.

August Burg

PhD Ice-Ocean Boundaries

In his PhD (starting mid-November 2025), August will investigate melting and mixing processes in subglacial ocean currents. He will utilize high-fidelity numerical simulations to gain a detailed understanding of the dynamics of ice–ocean boundary layers. To also explore highly turbulent regimes that are inaccessible to simulations, he will take part in laboratory experiments on the melting of ice in contact with salt water.
